D&D WITH ERIC THE DM #26: Social Distancing
Eric the DM
Hello adventurers far and wide! I hope you are all doing well and staying safe during these hectic times! I thought today I would talk to you about some of the fun gaming things you can do while maintaining your “Social Distancing.”
Many if not all of you have probably had to put your tabletop gaming on hold recently. A very smart precaution to be sure! But you can still have fun and roll those dice if you just take the time to do a little extra planning.
One of the things you can do during this time is catch up on your reading! No doubt you have some Dungeons and Dragons book or some other gaming supplement you have been trying to read but have not had the chance. Well now is the time! If you don’t have a gaming book, consider buying one. Maybe you’ve always wanted to learn more about the Psionic class, or you are interested in one of Rifts new world books. If you take this time to learn about these things now you will be ready to go once your group is able to meet again! This may be a great time to look into some new gaming system! Have you always wanted to try Palladium, or GURPS, or White Wolf? Pick up some of their core books and see what they are about! www.TheTableTopGameShop.com also has TONS of reading material and artwork available! Dive in and see what is there to inspire you!
Another thing you can do is make up a character or two! We all know how long character creation takes. Now that you have some time why not bust out your best dice and roll up that dwarven rogue you’ve been thinking about? Or how about an illusionist? Making characters is fun and by going through the process you will learn more about some other class, have fun, and end up with a few completed characters ready to play when the time is right!
And why stop with characters? Using your dice and your imagination you could roll up a new vehicle for your party. Deck it out with all the weapons and armor you have been dreaming of! Design a new base for your group! Think about the layout and what defenses, traps, and escape routes it can have. How about rolling yourself up a suit new set of power armor?! The sky is the limit! This is a chance to investigate all the things you have ever wanted to make or have in game.
For DMs you could use this time to make up an entirely new adventure thread. Consider purchasing a module of some kind (or find one online!) and tear into it! When your players return you will have an incredible series of adventures waiting for them!
There are also ways to continue adventuring now if you have access to the internet. Group calling programs like Skype, Zoom, and many others can allow your group to play in real time! Think about getting a hold of your gaming friends and seeing if they can get online and play with you there!
If you don’t have access to the internet but have a phone you could game with just one other friend. This style of 1 on 1 gaming can be really fun and helps build a bond with one special friend. You may even consider taking turns DMing for each other. If you have brothers and sisters stuck inside with you, you can ask them if they would like to play. You may be introducing them to an incredible new experience!
These are just a few examples. Many of you may have your own unique solutions to continue your gaming fun and we would love to hear them! What are you doing with your dice and your gaming materials? Let us know in the comments!
Most of all stay safe out there. We will all get through this soon! Don’t let this get you down! Keep playing and reading and using your imagination! I’ll be thinking of you adventurers! Stay strong and keep rolling those dice!
