D&D WITH ERIC THE DM #39: Down Time
Welcome back adventurers! Come have a seat by my fire! It’s great to see you all again! Feel free to set up your camp next to mine and we will talk for a while! I’ve got mulled wine warming and some meat on the fire! Help yourself!
What do you normally do when you are camping in game? It doesn’t have to be camping per se. Resting, downtime, etc. There are gaps in between every adventure that must be filled whether you are deep in an underground dungeon or living the highlife in a fancy room in a capital city. What you do during these times can be very important! Will you rest to regain magic and stamina? Will you go out and try and make friends or find information? Or maybe just go shopping? There are so many possibilities!
Much of what you can and cannot do will be dictated by where you are. This is probably the first thing you should consider when you are preparing to have a break in game. Is your location safe? What can you do to make it safer? Will you need to stand guard? It might be helpful to make a list of question and answer them each time you prepare to rest.
Another thing to consider is how much time do you have. Are you on a time sensitive quest? How much time will be needed to regain all your strength and magic? Some classes have rituals or spells they can cast to enhance your rest time. Don’t forget to use them! Another thing to consider if you need to have a guard is that familiars, intelligent pets, and even summonable beings and creatures can also often be used for guard duty. This allows your characters to get more rest!
If you are someplace safe (depending on your DM no place may be safe ha ha) you could have many more options available to you. One option many players don’t considers is just going out and having fun! Your characters are living breathing beings! It can’t be work all the time! How dull! Why not go out to a tavern or a show in a town you are at? These types of outings round out your character, and give exciting unique chances for roleplay! Never discount the idea of going out and having some fun!
Also consider practicing your skills. Can you sing or act? Sew or Sculpt? Practicing your skills in a variety of settings can have unique results! A passing noble may be enchanted by your singing, or you might produce some work of art you can sell for a pretty platinum! Think of ways to roleplay when you have downtime. It’s much more rewarding than just saying, "I'm going to sleep."
This can also be a great time for your party to organize. Maybe you have just cleared a dungeon and you are finally in a safe place for an afternoon. You can use this time to separate treasure, weapons, and magical items amongst your party. You can also use this time to take personal stock. How are your weapons and armor? Do you need rations? Water? Wine? Get it now while you can!
This all only scratches the surface! What other things do you do during your in game breaks that you think are important? Let us know! Share your thoughts and ideas here and let us know!
Well, it looks like camp is all set up! Have something to eat and drink and rest up! A new adventure begins tomorrow! Stay well adventurers and KEEP ROLLING THOSE DICE!
